How a Sewing Machine and a Dream Shaped My Life

This is a deeply personal story — about how a 14-year-old me, a sewing machine, and a dream shaped the path I walk today.

When I was 14, I studied GCSE Textiles, and my grandmother gave me money for a sewing machine. Not just any sewing machine — it was my faithful, durable, and resilient Bernina 1008. I had no idea at the time that this gift would lay the foundation for my career, eventually supporting me as I create ethical, artful quilted fashion and accessories.

I’ve always known I was a little different. Throughout school and college, I felt the encouragement of my teachers who saw potential in me. Their support inspired me to pursue a degree in Textile Design at Edinburgh College of Art, and that experience helped shape the designer I am today.

After graduating, I was ready to start my own business and embrace the independence that came with it. It hasn’t been an easy journey. In a world that often values AI and mass production over the handmade, being a creative entrepreneur can feel like an uphill battle. I currently juggle several part-time jobs, and there are times I feel overwhelmed or deflated. I sometimes question the purpose of it all — the point of being who I am.

But today, I want to pause and take stock. I want to remember the love, support, and encouragement I’ve received along the way — from friends, family, and colleagues who have cheered me on. I am deeply grateful. My grandmother’s gift, my family who allows me to be myself, and friends who care enough to compliment my work have all been crucial to my journey.

Life is too short not to express gratitude. I hope that Anne Morgan Designs will continue to inspire, not just in my lifetime, but as a legacy for my children. Even if they don’t pursue a creative career, I hope they — and others — will understand the importance of creativity. Whether it’s sewing, knitting, painting, printing, dance, or music, creativity is essential for mental health and the soul. Without it, I wouldn’t be me.

I encourage everyone to support makers and creative teachers. Share their work, comment, like, and learn from them. These skills take years to develop, and those who are willing to teach deserve recognition.

If finances are tight, and you feel unable to join one of my sewing classes, please reach out. I would be happy to offer a voucher for my website because creativity should be accessible to everyone. I want you to experience the joy of making, and I would love for you to join me on this journey.

Why I started this Blog and Teach

Being a designer isn’t just about creating beautiful things — it’s about connection, expression, and keeping handmade traditions alive. Every stitch, every quilt, every class I teach is part of a bigger story: the story of valuing creativity, resilience, and human skill.

Thank you for being part of this journey, for supporting handmade, and for celebrating creativity in all its forms.

Just reach out on my website or through my instagram to chat.

Love Anne Morgan
